Joining the Club

The best way to learn to fence is to come along to the Club. We welcome all interested participants to visit the Club, watch a session and talk to our coaches and members.

Short courses

If you are interested in having a go, then you can also do a beginners course that will teach you all the basics you need to learn to fence. New courses commence at the start of each school term for both school age and adult fencers (~10 sessions of 2 hours).

Membership

No prior skills are required to learn to fence, and the club warmly welcomes all new fencers regardless of age or ability. You do not need to be at UWA or even a student to fence with the Club. Membership is open to anyone – children, seniors and wheelchair athletes are all welcome to participate.

What you will need

The Club provides all necessary fencing equipment, including weapons and safety equipment. Beginners should wear a pair of tracksuit bottoms, T-shirt and trainers when they attend the Club. A well fitting glove (eg. gardening glove) is also recommended. It is also sensible to bring a long sleeved top to keep warm after sessions and a water bottle to keep well hydrated during training.

Safety

Safety is paramount at the club. Members are required to use the safety gear provided whenever they practice or bout. Fencers should wear a jacket, mask, long trousers and a glove whenever training. Coaches, referees and senior club members should be obeyed at all times in relation to matters of safety. Several club members also possess current first aid qualifications and the Club also follows a Healthy Club policy.

Equipment

Fencers traditionally wear a pair of breeches, a purpose designed jacket, plastron (protective under-jacket), mask and glove as well as long socks and court shoes. Modern fencing is typically conducted using electronic scoring machines to assist the referee. This involves wearing an additional metallic jacket (lamé) in foil and sabre to indicate the target. In foil and epee, the weapons have a tiny switch at the tip to indicate that a point has been scored.

Membership of UWA Fencing Club includes use of equipment for beginners. The Club has all necessary equipment including weapons, masks and training jackets.

We can also advise on where to purchase equipment and on what to purchase depending upon your personal circumstances. Members will be encouraged to buy their own collection of gear as they progress.
